You can reuse bacon grease for several times.


That is to say, you can use bacon grease up to 4 months if it is being stored well in the refrigerator.
If you are using bacon grease for deep frying, make sure that after deep frying pour it in separate container so that you don't mix with fresh bacon grease. The used bacon grease should not be used more than two times for deep frying because it can become unhealthy to your health as it can cause stomach aches and the risk of developing body tumors which can develop into cancer.


Fresh bacon grease needs to be poured and sealed in a ceramic container such as a mason jar or ceramic jar because does not absorb odors. This will keep the bacon grease from not developing unpleasant smell or a choking smell.


Another option is a stainless steel container which helps to block out light. The stainless steel container will prevent light from penetrating through allowing the bacon grease not to get spoiled.


Before cooking, first reheat the bacon grease. Avoid over reheating because it will reduce the taste and quality of the bacon grease.


After using some of the bacon grease, you will need to place it back in the refrigerator for future consumption.


Bacon grease can be used for some months before it expires. That is to say; it is not long lasting. You can't use bacon grease for a longer period of time, you should rather use it for a specified period in order to maintain its quality.
To know whether bacon grease is past expiration date, you can observe the following.

  1. The color of the bacon grease changes. If it turns to a yellow color, it means the bacon grease has got expired or spoiled.

  2. The expired bacon grease will produce a bad smell or odor which is not good to your health.

  3. If the expired bacon grease is used in cooking food, it will make the cooked food undesirable to eat because it will taste bitter. You will fail to eat the food which will lead to pouring it in a rubbish bin.

  4. The food cooked with expired bacon grease can cause stomach complications after being eaten.


To make bacon grease;

  • Heat the saucepan at medium-low heat on a stove.

  • Lay out strips of raw bacon.

  • Then cook the strips for 15 minutes to form bacon grease or fat.

  • Turn off the stove.

  • Remove the saucepan from the stove.

  • Get a ceramic container and pour the bacon grease in it.

  • After filling the ceramic container with bacon grease then seal and place in the fridge.

  • How to filter the bacon grease to remove the small pieces of undissolved bacon.

  • Get a coffee filter and center it in your strainer.

  • Then pour hot bacon grease into the center of the filter. You should pour hot bacon grease so that it can pass through the paper easily.

  • Frying food in bacon grease;

  • Avoid using too much grease for frying food on a daily basis because it can be bad for your health. This increases the risk of heart diseases if food eaten on a daily basis contains high amounts of bacon grease.

  • You can fry bacon grease with beef, fresh fish, eggs and greens such as spinach, cabbage and cucumber.

  • You scoop a few spoons of bacon grease on to the saucepan then reheat on a stove to melt and start frying food.

  • To store bacon grease, follow the steps below;

  • You should store bacon grease at room temperature as long as it is sealed in an airtight container.

  • In addition, you can keep bacon grease in the fridge for longer storage periods. This increases the shelf life of bacon grease. It also maintains the quality of the bacon grease.
    The method of refrigeration will make the bacon grease stay soft and easy to scoop.

  • Avoid placing the mason jar containing bacon grease on the counter for many days. The bacon grease will last for fews and later become rancid.
